We wanted to let you all know some information around our plans for an Academy Programme in 2024.
Over the past couple of years we have scrambled at the end of the season to organise "Academy" teams to go away to tournaments at the end of the season, this has been less than ideal for many reasons, but the main one being team continuity, especially going away to tournaments such as the McCartney Tournament in Taupo.
We have noticed over the past couple of years at this tournament that the quality of players in this region is not that far off from the rest of the country, our feeling is that if we can get a team playing together the entire winter season then they will be far better prepared for this tournament.
Our plan for 2024, is to create Academy Teams that play together throughout the season, we will be holding trials during Term 1 next year.
I am currently working on securing coaches for these teams, we hope to have:
10th Grade
11th Grade
12th Grade Boys Teams
12th Grade Girls Only team
We would love to have an older Girls Only team as well, but we are mindful of finding the right coach to support this.
We don't want to over promise if we can't sustain it to a level we are happy with.
As this is a new programme and a new way of doing this in this space, we want to try and do the best we can and get things right and hopefully expand the programme in 2025.
The coaches will be heavily supported by our Director of Football, Max Coleman.
The Academy coaches will be encouraged and supported to follow a style of football that aligns throughout the whole club.
There will be a large focus on individual player development and aiming to provide players with the best environment to do this.
If your child trials for the team and is unsuccessful, there will still be plenty of options for teams to play in at the club, myself and the other coaches will also be keeping track of any players that miss out on a space in the Academy, if we feel these players have shown good development throughout the season there could potentially be a space for them to attend the tournament with the team.
