In 2025, the Central Development Leagues were launched for U13 and U15 boys, as well as U13 and U14 girls. These leagues replaced the Central Federation Talent Centre programme, which had previously identified the region’s most talented players through a trial process and enabled them to represent the Central region.
New Plymouth Rangers AFC selected teams for all grades through trials held in Term 1. Strong player development was evident across the programme, along with some excellent results from the 13th grade teams. The Boys’ 13th Grade finished second, narrowly behind a team with whom they shared honours during the season.
The league is a regional competition, with travel requirements extending as far as Palmerston North and potentially Taupō. The boys’ league is played every weekend, whereas the girls’ competition consists of four game days during the season, played on Sundays. The girls also continue to compete in their local leagues on Saturdays.
In 2026, the programme will expand with the addition of a Boys’ 14th Grade league.
In 2025, the club invested in coach development to meet the ongoing requirements of the Central Development Leagues and will continue to do so. Several of our coaches either hold a C-Licence or are currently working towards completion. In 2026, two coaches will attend the B-Licence course.
In addition, one of our coaches has completed the C-Licence Goalkeeping course requirements and is working towards full certification. We see this investment as a significant step in ensuring the long-term sustainability of the CDL and in providing high-quality development opportunities for our youth players.
The CDL is a valuable step in our pathways for our youth to be introduced into senior football helping to maintain engagement and in some cases friendships in the game beyond school years.
In 2026 our experienced and successful women’s coaching team will work closely with the 15th grade girls’ team to integrate the girls into the demands and technical aspects of women’s football and higher intensity level training.
Open training sessions Thursday 29 January and Thursday 5 February 4.30pm at Merrilands Domain.
