Rangers make a fine start to 2019
On Sunday Peggy Gordon's New Plymouth Rangers met Hokowhitu from Palmerston North in the first Lotto Central Federation match of the season at Yarrow Stadium.
Boasting five players making their competitive debut for the club, NPR made a great start to the match. It was however Hokowhitu who made the breakthough after a great strike from outside the box by ex Eltham player Joeb Cadman. This seemed to spark Rangers into an extra gear and they found two quick goals from man of the match Taku Warren. He linked up well with 16 year Henry Parker and new import Kieran Sturrock to secure the lead.
A physical Hokowhitu side fought their way back into the game well to go into halftime at 2-2. At this stage coach Juliano Schmeling rung the changes and substitute Dom Squatriti made an immediate impact with a delightful chip over the goalkeeper to retake the lead.
In the closing minutes another debutant, Izaak Ryan put through a great pass for Squatriti to beat the goalkeeper one on one to get his second goal and complete a fine 4-2 victory.
Next weekend the team travel to Havelock North for their second fixture.
It rounded off a great weekend for the club as their six senior teams all won.
The women's team won 4-1 in the curtain raiser at Yarrow Stadium against Inglewood, while the Premiers beat Woodleigh 3-2 with a last gasp penalty from James Graham. The Championship side swept away Woodleigh 2nd X1 7-3, and the Division One side comfortably beat Waitara 6-0. The Masters team rounded off this fine start for the club by also beat Waitara 5-1 in Division Two.
