Rangers academy builds on its success

What started as a player development programme in 2017 has evolved into a strong academy system that continues to grow. The New Plymouth Rangers Academy was created in 2018 to enable a pathway for talented local footballers to progress towards elite football.

In its inaugural year the two squads performed beyond expectations achieving some stellar results.

The 11th grade academy competed in three tournaments in Wellington, Whanganui and Taupo, placing second, first and fourth respectively whilst the 10th grade squad came second and seventh in their tournaments.

The 2019 season will see the academy continue to build on the foundation and broaden to now include more age groups and more tournaments. Highly qualified coaches Manuel Luque and Juliano Schmeling will continue to run the programme and are excited by the prospect. “We have seen a huge improvement in these players since the start of last year, we have some very talented athletes in this squad” Schmeling said.

“There is so much potential and our job is to guide them to the next level”

The next level could be an opportunity in Australia for the 12th grade academy squad. They have been invited to attend a tournament in July on the Gold Coast and the team is buzzing. Fundraising has started and parent Eddie Brown says “our boys are working really hard on the field so we are working hard off it to ensure they have the best chance of success”. Quiz nights and cake stalls are just some of the events planned at this stage to cover the large costs of the trip.

The Academy squads will train once a week with these expert coaches and another with their own team coach. They will also have opportunities to play at Pukekura Park and Yarrow Stadium as curtain raisers to the Rangers Federation team in the Central Federation League. Schmeling who also coaches the top senior mens team said “if we can provide environments that replicate those of professional clubs then these players will thrive”.

Feeding into the academy system is the Rangers Foundation Programme that is a training opportunity for players wanting to develop their skills. Also coached by Juliano and Manuel, this is a link between club football and the academy. 2019 promises to be a busy but exciting year as Rangers continue to offer the best development pathways for any young player in Taranaki.
