A makeshift New Plymouth Rangers provided National League side Hamilton Wanderers with a good warmup match at Porritt Stadium today.
Juliano Schmeling fielded two invitation players from Hawera, Sam Jiggins and Markus Ernest and also filled a couple of gaps by adding Adam Lasheen and Oisin Amundsen who had played the previous day in Hamilton. Also 2017 Rangers player Sam Adeyinka joined the squad from Auckland and also Ben Moore swapped his Hamilton Wanderers top for the blue and black shirt.
Sunday’s match was played in three 30 minutes thirds and Wanderers were three up within 20 minutes before adding another four without reply before the final whistle.
Rangers’ closest effort came from Markus Ernest whose lob after he split the central defensive duo landed on the roof of the net.
The match did have a humorous side as one of Wanderers’ South American imports found the Spanish he had uttered in frustration at not receiving a freekick was clearly understood by referee Hamzi Mahagna, prompting the player to be substituted.
On Saturday Monty Ammudsen took a Division 2 selection to Hamilton to play former member Roy Pilott’s Sunday Social League team, Post Office Technicians, sponsored by Petroleum Services Limited (PSL).
The match, played in summer-like condition at Melville AFC’s home was an entertaining and for the most part highly social affair which PSL won 4-1. A new trophy was presented at the after match gathering, and Rangers players were already talking about hosting the Sunday league team in 2019.
We have a selection of pictures from both matches which will be displayed on our facebook page.
